Artificial tears can provide temporary comfort when your eyes feel dry, gritty, or irritated. But if you find yourself reaching for drops throughout the day without lasting relief, the problem may go deeper than a lack of moisture. At Silver Lake Eye Care Center, we offer advanced dry eye treatment in Everett, WA, including radiofrequency and intense pulsed light therapy designed to address common underlying causes of chronic dry eye.
Many cases of persistent dry eye are connected to meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD. The meibomian glands along the eyelids produce oils that keep tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or inflamed, the tear film can become unstable.
Lubricating drops may temporarily replace moisture, but they do not necessarily improve the function of blocked glands or address inflammation. That is why identifying the cause of dry eye is an important part of developing an effective treatment plan.
Signs that it may be time for a dry eye evaluation include:
• Frequent burning, stinging, or grittiness
• Red or irritated eyes
• Watery eyes despite feeling dry
• Blurry or fluctuating vision
• Contact lens discomfort
• Needing artificial tears repeatedly throughout the day
We offer Forma-I radiofrequency, or RF, as an advanced treatment for dry eye related to meibomian gland dysfunction. Forma-I delivers controlled thermal energy around the eyelids to gently heat blocked meibomian glands. This can help improve oil flow, gland function, and tear film stability. The treatment is non-surgical and is performed in our office. Many patients describe the sensation as similar to a warm, gentle massage around the eyes.
Lumecca-I intense pulsed light, or IPL, takes a different approach. IPL uses targeted pulses of light to help address inflammation associated with dry eye. It may be particularly beneficial when ocular rosacea, inflammatory dry eye, or meibomian gland dysfunction is contributing to symptoms. By reducing sources of inflammation around the eyelids, IPL can support healthier meibomian gland function and a more stable tear film.
RF and IPL are not necessarily competing treatments. Each targets different factors that may contribute to dry eye, and some patients may benefit from a treatment plan that incorporates both.
RF primarily uses heat to address meibomian gland blockages and improve oil flow, while IPL is designed to target inflammation and abnormal blood vessels associated with certain forms of dry eye. Our Everett eye doctors evaluate your tear film, eyelids, meibomian glands, and ocular surface before recommending treatment.
If artificial tears are becoming a daily routine without providing enough relief, schedule a dry eye evaluation with Silver Lake Eye Care Center to learn whether Forma-I radiofrequency, Lumecca-I IPL, or another personalized treatment option can help improve your comfort.
